A blurry or oddly-sized display is usually caused by an incorrect resolution setting, the wrong scaling percentage, or an app that does not handle high-DPI screens properly. All of these are straightforward to fix.
Set the Correct Screen Resolution
Right-click the desktop and choose Display settings. Scroll to Display resolution and look for the entry marked (Recommended). This is your monitor's native resolution and always gives the sharpest image. Any other resolution will look slightly blurry because the monitor has to scale pixels. Select the recommended option and click Keep changes.
Adjust the Scaling Setting
On the same Display settings page, look for Scale (Windows 11) or Change the size of text, apps, and other items (Windows 10). Windows usually recommends 100%, 125%, or 150% depending on the screen size and resolution. Use the recommended value to start. If text is too small at 100%, try 125%. Avoid unusual percentages like 110% or 175% as these can cause blurriness.
Fix Blurry Specific Apps
Some older desktop programs were not designed for high-DPI displays and look blurry even when Windows is correctly configured. To fix a specific app:
- Right-click the application's shortcut and choose Properties.
- Go to the Compatibility tab.
- Click Change high DPI settings.
- Check Override high DPI scaling behaviour and set the dropdown to Application or System (Enhanced).
- Click OK, restart the app, and check if it looks sharper.
Update the Graphics Driver
An outdated or incorrectly installed display driver can cause resolution and scaling problems. Open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, right-click the GPU, and choose Update driver.
For External Monitors
If a connected monitor looks blurry but the laptop screen is fine, make sure the monitor's resolution is set to its native resolution in Display settings. If you are connecting via HDMI and the image looks softer than expected, try using a DisplayPort cable — HDMI on some older monitors applies additional processing that can soften the image.
If the display looks blurry regardless of what resolution you choose, or the recommended option is not available, the correct display driver may not be installed. Ask us and mention your monitor model and GPU.
