This error almost always means one of three things: the installer file is the wrong version for your PC, the file is damaged, or Windows is blocking it for security reasons. Work through the checks below in order.
Check whether you downloaded the right version
Most software comes in 32-bit and 64-bit editions. To find out which Windows you have, press Win + Pause (or right-click 'This PC' and choose 'Properties'). Under Device specifications look at System type. If it says 64-bit operating system, download the 64-bit version of the app. If you downloaded a 32-bit installer by mistake, re-download the correct one from the vendor's site.
Check whether the app supports your version of Windows
Some older programs do not run on Windows 11. Check the software's system requirements on the vendor's website. If the app only supports Windows 10 or earlier, see our guide on running programs in compatibility mode.
Unblock the file
- Right-click the installer and choose 'Properties'.
- On the General tab, look for an 'Unblock' checkbox near the bottom.
- Tick it, click 'Apply', then try running the installer again.
Re-download the installer
A partially downloaded or corrupted file can trigger this error. Delete the installer and download a fresh copy directly from the official source.
Check your antivirus
Security software sometimes blocks unfamiliar executables. Temporarily check your antivirus quarantine or activity log to see if it intercepted the file. If it did, and you trust the software, restore it and add an exception — or see our guide on antivirus blocking trusted programs.
